It was a little over a year since I moved into my place and I was still staring at white walls. I didn’t mind so much not having them painted. It’s easy to live with white walls. There is such a clean and uncluttered feeling about them. But I wasn’t feeling exactly inspired by them, either.
I think what made it so hard for me to get started was choosing the color, the right color. You would think, for a designer who has to make daily decisions about color and sifts through hundreds of Pantone color chips, this would be a piece of cake. For me, it wasn’t.
What made it easier, however, was the change of seasons. Finally, spring was here and enough waiting, it was time to get started! I was ready for a fresh, new look. I wanted a space that’s inspiring and refreshing. For me, that color is green. When I think of green, I think of being in nature. Nature evokes thoughts of growth, healing and harmony. I associate green with fresh grass, the first buds of spring and renewal. As a decorative color, green can be paired with so many other colors.
I arrived at my first green color because of a little photo that caught my eye in my InStyle magazine. It’s caption read: “My green dining room is a cheery backdrop in party photos.” (Rina Stone, creative director)
Who wouldn’t want a cheery room? For me, it was a little too cheery, too vibrant and too loud. I decided to go with my original color green I had picked out a while back. Should have trusted my first instinct. As soon as I started painting the softer, more neutral green, I was instantly satisfied. Now the room is completed, and I feel I’ve achieved an inspiring and creative space.
Now it’s on to the next room. In keeping with the nature theme, I think I’ll choose the Caribbean Blue.
